the centre
Following on from 'Escape', 'Lost in the Blackdown Hills' charts the journey of seven hardy explorers from the centre of the Blackdown Hills in Upottery (grid ref ST 20100,08900) on the Northern Escape route towards Taunton. With the route planned in advance by myself and artist/blackdown Guru Gordon Field all the information was loaded on to three hand held GPS receivers, which we gave to Liz, Brian, Manny, Dexter and Ken so they could lead the walk. Did we get lost?!
Escape
After identifying ‘his’ centre of the Blackdown Hills Simon completed eight escapes on foot following the points of the compass, between the shortest and longest days. The routes were planned using mapping software and recorded using a hand held GPS and a camera. The resulting body of work is a collection of drawings and photographs that combine spatial and time based statistical data with emotional and sensory responses to the landscape.
